The Market is also stocked with plenty of gifts from local brands like Sideshow Press and Bittermilk, and we’ll have jewelry

Tomato sandwiches slathered with mayo, thick-sliced heirlooms drizzled with fruity olive oil, tomato pies warmed up and cooled down again. Is there anything better than the endless possibilities of a summer tomato?

Didn’t think so. That’s why Mixson Market is bringing back Tomayto Tomahto, its annual celebration of the tomato harvest, this Saturday June 27 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. GrowFood Carolina will haul in South Carolina-grown tomatoes by the bushel and the peck, and a few local chefs will make their best salsa for the Hot Chef Salsa Smackdown. Participants include Bryan Cates of Basico, Russ Moore of SNOB, Jacques Larson of Wild Olive/Obstinate Daughter, and Graham Dailey of Peninsula Grill. Attendees will be tasked with tasting these salsas and deciding who put their tomatoes to the best use.

The popular tomato pie contest returns this year, and those interested in entering are encouraged to bring their best pies on the day of the event. Pie judging begins at 1 p.m. by a slate of celebrity judges. Winners will be awarded prizes. Participants can email bryan@mixsonbrc.com to reserve their contest slot.

Attendees can also sample tomato-inspired fare from Chef Bryan Cates of Basico, taste tomatoes with Holy Smoke Olive Oil and Bull’s Bay sea salt, and partake of the Bloody Mary bar.

Kelly Chu’s Cirsea ice cream company will be experimenting with some tomato ice cream and sorbet flavors (think tomato basil) and will have cups and pints for sale at the event.

Each Saturday throughout the growing season, Mixson Farmers Market partners with GrowFood Carolina to provide a one-stop shop for fresh produce grown by S.C. farmers. In addition to seasonal fruit and vegetables, the Farmers Market also stocks raw milk, local cheeses, fresh breads, artisanal grains, honey, jams, jellies, and other goodies. The Farmers Market runs Saturdays from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. through Nov. 7.

Kelly Chu of Aya Cookhouse and Red Orchids will be scooping up some freshly made blueberry ice cream, and the Mixson Farmers Market will be up and running with a variety of fresh produce and wares for purchase.

Attendees are invited to participate in a recipe contest and swap. Recipes can be savory or sweet, and celebrity judges will be on hand to judge the winner in each category along with a best overall. The contest is limited, but everyone is welcome to swap their best blueberry recipes at the event and on Mixson Farmers Market’s Facebook page. facebook.com/MixsonFarmersMarket.
